Techniques and materials

Ceramic, glaze, memories

Delia Kunze works with materials that hold both strength and fragility within them.
In her hands, clay becomes a vessel of memory: every surface preserves the trace of touch, every crackle glaze a fine line of time.

Her work grows from a sensitive balance between form and emotion. Delicate colors emerge from superimposed layers, light as watercolor,
transparent, breathing and alive.

They evoke fleeting sketches, glimmers of light, and movements of the soul.
Thus, material and emotion merge: earth, glaze, and fire unite in a presence both silent and enduring, a form of contemporary ceramics that finds depth in restraint.
Each bowl, each sculpture speaks of memory, craft, and patience. A tangible poetry, not explained, but felt.

I find all of Delia Kunze’s works extraordinary.
I love them deeply, in my home, a living art now resides.

Ceramic without spinning wheel

Delia Kunze’s works are created through the handbuilding technique, shaped layer by layer, without the use of the wheel. This slow and mindful process allows for precise control of form and a direct connection with the material.

Each line is born of an intentional movement; each transition retains the trace of the hand, a form of contemporary ceramics that unites form and presence, patience and gesture.

Ceramic firing

The ceramic firing used by Delia Kunze involves reducing the oxygen supply during the final stage in the kiln.
This process transforms the ceramic material and alters the chemical composition of the glazes, creating metallic reflections, subtle color gradations, and unique crackle structures.

In Delia Kunze’s contemporary ceramics, reduction firing is not merely a technical act but a moment of metamorphosis; the instant when earth, glaze, and fire find balance and reveal the true voice of ceramic art.

The nuances

The graphic traces in Delia Kunze’s ceramics are created through the application of engobes and color oxides. The fine lines thicken and intertwine until they become threads of memory, flowing like delicate imprints across the ceramic surface. Thus emerges a form of contemporary ceramics that does not decorate but tells — in every mark, in every fracture, in every shade of color. A silent writing, shaped by gesture and time.

Oro, riparare come nuovo inizio

In some of Delia Kunze’s works, fine golden veins run across the surface, lines that do not conceal the fractures, but transform them.

What was once a mark of rupture becomes a trace of life, a connection between past and present. These gold inclusions arise from a delicate process in which metal becomes a sign of renewal.
The aim is not perfection, but continuity. The ability to make what endures visible. As in nature, beauty grows where fragility is revealed.

Poetic precision

This union of handbuilding technique, crackle glazes, and reduction firing forms the core of Delia Kunze’s artistic identity. Her works are entirely handmade, at once silent and precise, ceramics shaped like sculptures, sustained by patience, attentiveness, and inner clarity.
