Delia Kunze
Ceramic Artistry
"Within the fragility of porcelain, I find nature’s poetry once more: each petal seared into the clay recounts a tale of transience, made everlasting by fire and the fervor of craft."
The Craquelure
In Delia Kunze’s contemporary ceramic art, the surface becomes a living weave of light and movement.
The crackle structures emerge from the encounter between clay, glaze, and fire, fine lines that stretch like a silent network across each form.
Each piece gains depth and character, like a breath impressed into the material or a landscape unfolding slowly over time.
The crackle glazes capture the light, shift with the gaze, and reveal the instant of firing. A form of contemporary ceramics that finds its strength in delicacy, in the balance between gesture and time.

Each piece arises from the interplay of reduction firing and plant-inspired creativity, resulting in one-of-a-kind ceramics in delicate tones
The Artist
Delia Kunze was born in 1966 in East Berlin, in the shadow of the Berlin Wall, during a time of boundaries and anticipation. That divided world shaped her way of seeing — a sensibility attuned to space, to essential forms and fine lines that would later become the heart of her contemporary ceramic art.
From early childhood, her creative inclination was unmistakable. Her classmates used to say with affection, “Delia makes art.” Near the Kastanienallee, she modeled her first figures — small, improvised works already marked by surprising clarity and intention.
At twenty, she left East Berlin to begin a new life in the West. She worked successfully as a businesswoman and spent time in the United States, where she deepened her understanding of structure, color, and composition.
Yet art remained always present, quiet and insistent, like an inner voice that never fades.
One day, seeing a daisy growing through a crack in the Berlin Wall, Delia recognized a symbol that would accompany all her work: fragility that endures, beauty born of tension.
This vision runs through her artisanal ceramics, created using the handbuilding technique, shaped layer by layer, with delicate colors and fine lines. A balance of precision and poetry that defines her contemporary ceramics.
The Atelier
In Delia Kunze’s ceramic studio, earth meets fire and memory takes shape.
Each piece is born in silence, handbuilt like a sculpture, between concentration and poetry.
Molding
Each work by Delia Kunze is shaped directly by her hands, without the use of the wheel.
This slow and mindful process of handbuilt ceramics preserves the spontaneity of the artistic gesture, making every piece a unique creation. The form unfolds layer by layer, like a silent movement impressed into the clay, handcrafted ceramic art that unites precision and poetry, material and emotion.
Decoration
The surface is treated with transparent engobes, applied in multiple layers.
This creates chromatic depth and delicate shades that fully emerge only during reduction firing.Fine lines, traces, and subtle veils of color merge into a painterly skin where memory and nature resurface. A form of contemporary ceramics that speaks in a quiet, timeless voice.
Ceramic firing
During the final firing, at around 1000 °C in a reduction atmosphere, the glaze reveals its true color.
This process gives the ceramic surfaces their metallic reflections and highlights the crackle structures that lend each piece its quiet vitality. A slow and precise transformation, where fire and matter find balance within Delia Kunze’s contemporary ceramics, expressing stillness through depth and light.
Techniques and materials
Reduction firings
Delia Kunze works with stoneware and porcelain, materials that hold both strength and fragility within them.
In her hands, clay becomes a medium of memory: every surface preserves the trace of touch, every crackle glaze a fine line of time.
Her delicate colors emerge from transparent layers, reminiscent of watercolors, fleeting sketches of light and movement. Thus, material and emotion intertwine in a silent yet lasting presence. Contemporary ceramics that unite sensitivity and precision, fragility and permanence.
Metallic glazes
Delia Kunze’s works are created through the handbuilding technique, shaped layer by layer, without the use of the wheel. This slow and mindful process allows for precise control of form and an intimate connection with the material. The firing gives the glazes their depth: delicate shades, subtle crackle patterns, and vibrant ceramic surfaces.
The markings, drawn with engobes and color oxides, become fine lines, threads of memory running gently across the clay. Thus emerges a form of contemporary ceramics that does not decorate, but tells in every trace, every fracture, every tone of color, a quiet story of time and touch.
